Frontenac County has always been a source of great food. For millennia, it has been a hunting and fishing paradise. When European setters came, they farmed extensively. Times have changed. The farm community is not as large as it once was in Frontenac County, but it remains strong, and in niches, it is growing. Other food businesses, from home producers to innovative grocers and restaurants, also dot the landscape.
Farm to table
Spring is syrup time in Frontenac County, and then from May to October, Saturday morning farmers markets in Verona and Sharbot Lake are opportunities to buy fresh food and get to know local farmers and producers, many of whom sell at the farm gate as well.
And don’t miss out on two essential events on the Saturday of Labour Day weekend. The Verona Lion’s Park is home to the Verona Garlic Festival and Eastern Ontario Garlic Awards. But go early to avoid the crowds and get the best garlic. Later that same morning, head to Sharbot Lake for the Annual Butter Tart contest at the Sharbot Lake Farmers Market. On September 8, a unique opportunity to visit some of our more innovative farms, takes place during Open Farms. Through the summer at markets and special events, and especially in the fall at Christmas Craft and Bake Sales, local pies of every description are on display. Frontenac truly is the pie capital of Eastern Ontario.
Restaurants, Café’s & Bake Shops
Casual eateries are all the rage in Frontenac. From the Creekside Bar and Grill and Holiday Country Manor (where Sunday brunch is a must) in Battersea, to the Shamrock Bakery in Plevna, Muddy Waters in Verona, The Point Restaurant and Mill Street Café in Sydenham, Cardinal Cafe, The Maples and the Crossing Pub in Sharbot Lake, Addison’s (Northbrook) and the Wolfe Island Grill, Wolfe Island Bakery and Wolfe Island Pub and Pizzeria, there are places to relax and enjoy quality food in a relaxed atmosphere .
