Nature thrives in Frontenac County. The region is home to wildlife, natural landscapes, open water, and forests. Conserving nature is extremely important and there are many conservation sites located here #InFrontenac.

North Frontenac

  • Palmerston Canonto, Arcol Rd
Located in North Frontenac, Palmerston Canonto Conservation Area includes seven short hiking trails. Community volunteers and the Township of North Frontenac formed a partnership to take care of the almost 5 km of trails. The trails start from the dam between Palmerston and Canonto Lakes and include back country levels of hiking that can be enjoyed by everyone. Check out this blog post on the Trillium trails!

  • North Frontenac Parklands
The North Frontenac Parklands is the perfect spot to go backcountry camping. Additionally, find a range of hiking trails to experience nature and wildlife.

Central Frontenac

  • Meisel Woods Conservation Area, 1392 N Anderson Rd
The Meisel Woods Conservation Area is 130 acres of excellent Precambrian Shield land. It is a forested natural area with plants, animals and landscape typical of the headwaters of the Tay and Upper Rideau watershed. The property surrounds a 60 acre, headwaters lake known as Beaver or Bass Lake and includes additional waterfront on Crow Lake. Meisel Woods is a great spot to visit for a hike - check out a trail map here!

South Frontenac

  • Gould Lake, 1540 Gould Lake Rd
Gould Lake is home to over 1,235 acres of wilderness in the Canadian Shield and is the head waters of the Millhaven Creek System. Gould Lake is essential to water management, provides an excellent habitat for wildlife, and also offers opportunities for nature appreciation and recreation in all seasons. Gould Lake is a day use area and is perfect spot to go for a walk on the trail - find the main Rideau Trail within the area! Visit in the winter for cross country skiing. Alternatively, come in the summer to go for a swim at the beach, rent a kayak or canoe, go fishing, or call ahead to book a spot for a picnic!
  • Depot Lakes, 1662 2nd Lake Rd
Quinte Conservation welcomes you to Depot Lakes Conservation Area. Imagine a series of four lakes nestled in the heart of the Land O’ Lakes tourist region in Eastern Ontario. Located just north of the village of Verona, this Conservation Area is 3,000 acres with 9 km of rugged hiking trails. Explore places to swim, camp, hike, and connect with nature.
  • Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre, 1500 Hewlett-Packard Ln
The Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre (ELEEC) is the result of an agreement between the Queen’s University Biological Station (QUBS) and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). QUBS is one of the pre-eminent biological field stations in Canada known for research excellence and quality undergraduate learning experiences in field biology and other fields. There is a wide trail network to explore as well as a beautiful waterfront at which to swim (unsupervised) or rent a boat, if a registered guest. The site has a number of cabins and welcomes bookings for conferences, education, and other needs.

Frontenac Islands

  • Big Sandy Bay - Wolfe Island
Located on Wolfe Island, Big Sandy Bay is a gorgeous natural beach. The beach is opening soon for the 2021 season.
